A 38-year-old rivalry will be revived when Abu Dhabi Sailing Club (ADSC) go head-to-head with Dubai Offshore Sailing Club (DOSC) in the capital today.

Abu Dhabi & Dubai sailing rivalryAfter a 27-year break, local hostilities will take centre stage in the first leg of the Standard Chartered Challenge Cup.

The original competition was held two years after the UAE was founded in 1973 and its return has been welcomed by both clubs.

Today’s race will be followed by a return leg expected to be held in November in Dubai.

Regional head of business and corporate communication at Standard Charter Piers Townsend said: “There’s a bit of rivalry there. The last one was in 1984, but for no particular reason I think the event just lapsed and they’ve revived it for this year. It’s good for both of the clubs – it brings them together.”

The last race in 1984 was won by ADSC and they will be looking for a repeat performance in a race that involves 32 sailors in 20 dinghies, which are a mix of Lasers, Kestrels and RS400s.

In the morning, a series of team races on short courses will be held which is expected to test the sailing skills and knowledge combined with strategic planning as a team can only win if both of their boats cross the finish line.

The afternoon will see more of traditional fleet racing around the buoys. The first warning signal is at 10am, with a presentation ceremony scheduled for 17:30.
